Do vaccinated people "shed" the vaccine?

Some live vaccines really can release vaccine virus and pass it to others. mRNA (messenger RNA) and protein COVID-19 vaccines do not shed infectious vaccine virus. Small studies detected vaccine components in breast milk, but this does not establish harm to someone nearby.
Checked October 2026: WHO, Health Canada, 2021 milk study.
Why people believe it
There is something real behind the word: some live vaccines do release virus. A sociologist quoted by PolitiFact in 2021 suggested that unfamiliarity with new vaccines could make the story feel convincing. WHO Africa’s monitoring also traced the story to how people interpreted Pfizer trial documents. Those are reasons to take the question seriously. Ask which vaccine and which kind of shedding.
“Some vaccines can spread to other people”
Yes: in a ROTARIX rotavirus-vaccine trial of healthy twins aged 6 to 14 weeks, one twin in each pair received vaccine and the other a placebo (dummy treatment). Vaccine virus appeared in stool (poo) from 15 of 80 placebo twins studied. No stomach or bowel symptoms linked to the transmitted vaccine virus were observed in those 15 twins. The label advises caution when deciding whether to give ROTARIX to an infant whose close contacts have weakened immune systems (the body’s defenses). It weighs passing on vaccine virus against catching and spreading natural rotavirus.
In a FluMist nasal-vaccine trial with 197 children aged 8 through 36 months, one child given a placebo had a confirmed, mild vaccine-virus infection. These findings are about specific live vaccines, not every vaccination.
“I can catch the COVID vaccine”
mRNA vaccines contain no live virus. Protein vaccines contain protein pieces rather than the virus. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia explains that processing mRNA vaccines never produces whole virus particles. It also explains that the Novavax protein vaccine cannot cause viral shedding.
“But vaccine material leaves the body”
Yes: a 2021 study of mothers given the BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine found vaccine mRNA in some milk samples. Of 40 milk samples, 36 had none detectable. Rare detections were within the first week after either dose. A 2022 study of mothers given BNT162b2 tested serum samples from 21 mothers. It detected vaccine mRNA in 20 of 74 samples. It also detected it in five of 309 milk samples from 31 mothers tested.
The 2021 study’s authors supported breastfeeding without interruption. But they cautioned that their small sample of 14 women had similar characteristics. Their findings might not apply to other groups. The authors of a 2023 study abstract (a short summary) considered breastfeeding after vaccination safe, especially after 48 hours. But it says the minimum vaccine-mRNA dose that could trigger an immune reaction in babies under six months is unknown. It calls for mothers and healthcare providers to discuss breastfeeding benefits and risks during the first two days after the mother’s vaccination.
“Being nearby changes someone’s periods”
An online survey’s authors suggested possible indirect transmission through shedding. They recruited through social media and designed the survey for adult women experiencing problems with their periods. Their subgroup had 3,390 respondents who reported being unvaccinated for COVID-19, having had no COVID-19 symptoms and having had no positive COVID-19 test. For this subgroup, the authors reported an unadjusted heavier-bleeding relative risk of 1.34. This compares risk between groups without accounting for other factors. They compared daily contact within 6 feet of a vaccinated person outside the household against another contact pattern. That pattern was seldom, sometimes or daily contact outside 6 feet. They did not find their predicted pattern of more symptoms with closer daily contact. The authors themselves avoided definite conclusions about causes. This survey does not establish harmful transfer from vaccinated people.
“Vaccine effects can spread through sex”
WHO Africa recorded this claim in 2022 as a trend in false information, not as an established finding.
Thinking tool: how would it get there?
Ask what leaves the body and how it enters another person. Ask how much enters and what measured effect follows. This adapts the FDA’s reasoning about infectivity (ability to infect), amount and route. The guidance covers virus- or bacteria-based gene therapies (genetic treatments) and oncolytic products (tumor-destroying treatments). Finding mRNA in someone’s blood shows movement inside that person. Finding it in milk answers a different question. Neither finding alone shows the full chain of steps leading to harm nearby. The FDA notes that, for many disease-causing viruses and bacteria, the minimum infectious dose in humans may be undefined.
Use this on other claims. Ask for evidence at each step between finding something and the claimed harm.
Official positions, with dates
The CDC’s archived fact sheet was updated 15 December 2021. It said US COVID vaccines authorized at that time contained no live virus. That should not become a claim that no vaccine component can ever leave the body.
EMA’s page was checked 24 October 2026. It says tiny amounts of vaccine mRNA in breast milk were found within 48 hours after vaccination but not afterwards. It calls for more work to understand these findings and says this very small amount of mRNA is not expected to cause a safety problem. That answer has no date of its own. Its timing is not a cutoff that applies in every case. The 2021 study reported rare detections within the first week after either vaccine dose.
What people also ask
What does “shedding” mean medically?
In the FDA guidance above, it means release outside the patient through stool, body fluids or skin. It differs from movement inside the body.
Is viral shedding the same as contagious?
Finding material alone does not establish that it passed to someone else. The FDA separately considers whether released material can infect, how much there is, and its route.
How long does viral shedding last?
For vaccine virus, it depends on the vaccine. WHO describes several weeks after oral polio vaccination (given by mouth). CDC says rotavirus shedding may continue up to a month after the last dose.
Does the COVID vaccine come out of your body?
Some vaccine mRNA has been measured in breast milk. That is different from shedding infectious vaccine virus.

- Open GSK’s ROTARIX prescribing information (September 2026).
- Find “15 twins” in section 12.2.
- Ask: did detecting transmitted virus mean these twins had symptoms?
What you should have found
“In the 15 twins who received placebo, no gastrointestinal symptoms related to transmitted vaccine virus were observed.”
